Mark Lewisohn: Tune In!

L’écrivain et historien britannique Mark Lewisohn, aujourd’hui considéré comme le plus grand spécialiste mondial des Beatles, a collaboré avec EMI, MPL Communications et Apple Corps Ltd. Il a écrit plusieurs ouvrages de référence sur les Beatles.

C’est en 1986 que paraît The Beatles Live!, ouvrage qui détaille chronologiquement toutes les prestations publiques du groupe. Célèbre pour avoir identifié la date de la première rencontre entre John Lennon et Paul McCartney (le 06/07/1957 lors de la St. Peter's garden fete à Woolton - Liverpool), Mark Lewisohn est ensuite mandaté par EMI pour écouter la totalité des archives sonores du groupe (conservées à Abbey Road), soit tous leurs enregistrements de 1962 à 1969, chanson par chanson et prise par prise. Ce travail donnera naissance à The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions: The Official Story of the Abbey Road Years (1987). Introduit par une longue interview de Paul McCartney, cet ouvrage de référence détaille chaque session d’enregistrement des Beatles tout en nous offrant une multitude de détails techniques et d’interviews de techniciens de l’époque.

Suivront The Beatles: 25 Years In The Life en 1988 (republié deux ans plus tard sous le titre The Beatles Day by Day) puis le célèbre The Complete Beatles Chronicle en 1992. Mark Lewisohn publie The Beatles London (1994), co-écrit avec Piet Schreuders et Adam Smith. Il s’agit d’un guide des différents lieux de la capitale anglaise fréquentés par les Beatles. Une nouvelle publication verra le jour en 2008.

Par ailleurs, l’auteur britannique apporte sa contribution aux projets et publications du groupe dans les années 1990 et 2000 : il est impliqué dans le projet Anthology et participe à la rédaction du livre In My Life: Lennon Remembered qui accompagne la série en dix épisodes de la BBC sur John Lennon, et à l’ouvrage Wingspan de Paul McCartney (après avoir été rédacteur en chef de Club Sandwich, le fanzine du bassiste des Fab’4. Mark Lewisohn rédige également les notes sur les livrets de plusieurs albums de Paul McCartney ("Flaming Pie", "Band on the Run: 25th Anniversary Edition" et "Wingspan: Hits and History") ainsi que sur celui de l’album "One" des Beatles ainsi que des coffrets "The Capitol Albums Vol. 1" et "Produced by George Martin - 50 Years in Recording".

A noter qu’il préfacera des ouvrages comme Recording The Beatles de Brian Kehew and Kevin Ryan, Beatles Gear par Andy Babiuk et Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand de Thorsten Knublauch et Axel Korinth.

En 2005, Mark Lewisohn a annoncé qu’il entamait un long et passionnant travail sur une biographie définitive des Beatles en trois volumes. Cette trilogie, qui devait être achevée en 2018, verra paraître son premier volume, intitulé Tune In, à l'automne 2013. It was in 1986 that The Beatles Live! was published, book which chronologically detailing all of the Beatles’ live performances. Otherwise, the british author contributes to projects and publications of the group in the 1990’s and the 2000’s he was involved in the Anthology project.  He also contributes to In My Life: Lennon Remembered (a book accompanying the ten-part BBC radio series about John Lennon) and Paul McCartney’s Wingspan (after working as editor and writer of Club Sandwich, the fanzine of the bassist of the Fab'4. Lewisohn Mark writes liner notes for several albums of Paul McCartney ("Flaming Pie", "Band on the Run: 25th Anniversary Edition" and "Wingspan: Hits and History"), for the Beatles’ album "One", "the Capitol Albums Vol 1" and also for the retrospective box set "Produced by George Martin - 50 Years in Recording".
